Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a simple process of formal recognition through which your existing skills, knowledge and experience are assessed against a Nationally Recognised Qualification.

A process for RPL has been developed which focuses on relating assessment activities to actual job tasks.  The intention of this model is to streamline and simplify recognition processes for prospective candidates without compromising the integrity of the RPL process.


It is not unusual for a candidate to have performed (or be performing) certain tasks in the workplace but, for several reasons, find themselves unable to provide evidence – this could be because of confidentiality, or the very nature of the tasks performed.  This is where the competency conversation becomes part of the evidence-gathering activities.

From the evidence gathered, your assessor will formulate a series of questions specifically designed to provide you with opportunities to explain when, how, why and how these tasks were performed.  By asking such probing questions, you will be able to provide your assessor with the evidence they require to determine competency.  Of course, all statements you make must be validated by a third party.


As part of the application process you nominated those who are prepared to validate the statements made.  Once the evidence has been gathered and collated, your referees will be contacted and requested to complete the third-party report.
